Google's been drumming up hype for its upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat operating system with a cross-promotional marketing campaign with KitKat, but the company has yet to divulge any real information about what the new Android will bring to the table. It's not much, but a couple leaked snapshots of Android 4.4 KitKat show that Google could be moving towards a flatter interface much like Apple did with iOS 7.
An anonymous tipster sent a couple shots of a Nexus 4 handset running Android 4.4 over to a few Android news outlets over the weekend revealing a couple new details about the new Android. The shots haven't been confirmed by Google, so bear in mind there's always a chance of they're fake.
Still, a look at the stock homescreen pictured above shows us that Google (if these are accurate) will opt for a flatter look in Android 4.4 KitKat. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as Google's recent updates to its mobile apps already indicate a flatter aesthetic. Plus, Apple, the developer of Android rival iOS, recently did the same in iOS 7, revamping all of the icons for a thinner, more colorful look.
According to Android Authority, one of the websites that received the images from the tipster, the changes coming in Android 4.4 can be summarized as the following: flat icons, semitransparent navigation and status bar, top right icons change colors, different lockscreen apps background and a redesigned phone app.
Google is expected to officially reveal Android 4.4 KitKat alongside the Nexus 5 smartphone at a mid-October event.
