The Motorola Moto X has intrigued many with its highly customiazble features and competitive specs, and according to a new report, the handset is also one of the most durable smartphones on the market, even compared to the new Apple iPhone 5s and 5c and the Samsung Galaxy S4.
Protection plan company SquareTrade put the Moto X through a series of data durability tests, testing the phones in a variety of different situations to see how well they handled scratches and more severe damage. Of the four phones tested by SquareTrade, the Moto X had the least amount of damage risk. Apple's newest iPhones, the 5s and 5c, took second and third place respectively, and the Galaxy S4 came in fourth.
The full range of tests can be seen in the video below. SquareTrade clearly went to great lengths to see what kind of punishment the smartphones could withstand. The first thing that the company did was compare the various specs and dimensions of the four phones, including some aspects that users may not have thought of, such as water resistance, friction quotient and grip-ability. SquareTrade then used robots to drop the phones on their corners from a height of five feet, slid the smartphones across a table to test for scratches and scuffs and the robots even dunked the phones into water for 10 seconds.
The Moto X only suffered a small dent on the corner through all the testing, giving it the best rating. The second place iPhone 5s also survived the water dunk and got a dented corner, but slid completely off the table during the slide test. The third place iPhone 5c got a cracked screen after being dropped, and then suffered some performance issues after the water test. Finally, the last place Samsung Galaxy S4 almost flew off the table during the slide test, and was completely broken during the drop and water tests.
These tests give potential smartphone owners several examples of how some of the most popular smartphones of 2013 hold up in realistic scenarios, and could influence users concerned with durability to pick up the high-ranking Moto X.
