While fans of the Borderlands series are preparing to receive the latest (and probably final) pieces of DLC for Borderlands 2 this fall, developer Gearbox is preparing to bring two new IP's to gamers, which may indicate that the last bit of Borderlands 2 DLC may be the last new content for the series for quite some time.
While at PAX Prime, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that two new IP's would be coming from the developer, presumably on next-gen systems like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While one of those new series is a mystery, Gamespot announced that the company has been working on a new IP that was spawned from the now-cancelled game Brothers in Arms: Furious Four. This will most likely count towards one of the two new franchises that Gearbox is preparing for gamers in the near future.
While Randy Pitchford joked about revealing Borderlands 3 to the crowd at PAX Prime, it will most likely be years before the game is released. After all, Gearbox is still working on new content for Borderlands 2, and the transition from current to next-gen consoles will take some time for the developer to navigate. Considering Borderlands 2 set the bar as high as it did for fans, Gearbox will want to make sure the game is as good as possible, and considering the several hints about where the series' narrative will go after the events of Borderlands 2, Gearbox will be plenty busy ushering those ideas into reality.
For those curious about the new IP's Gearbox is working on, they will have an opportunity to learn more on Sept. 14, the company's 2013 Community Day. The event will be streamed online, and users can purchase the digital bonus pack to receive exclusive content for the event. The pack, which costs $19.99, will give users access to the closed beta access for one of the new IP's from the company, along with access to the Community Day stream and archived footage from the event. Those who purchase the pack will also receive exclusive skins for Borderlands 2, plus a digital download code for Homeworld HD and Homeworld Classic, whenever the games are released.
Gearbox will be busy in the coming years as they get ready for these two new IP's to be released, as well as planning the initial stages of Borderlands 3 eventually.
