Moto X Preview: Motorola Pulls Engraving, Cause for Concern Before Release Date?

The Moto X's defining feature may be in trouble. Motorola might have built the smartphone around the notion of its highly customizable features, but the company is apparently having difficulty delivering on that promise, and that could indicate even more peril down the road for Motorola's new handset.

J.R. Raphael of Computerworld is reporting that Motorola is unhappy with the quality of the engravings that users can get on their Moto X in the beta process, and has suspended the option for users for the phone's launch Friday, Aug. 23. However, there is hope that the option will again become available at some point in the future.

While this may seem like a minor setback for the Moto X, this could shake the faith of many who were banking on Motorola delivering their grand proclamations about the phone and its available customizable features. After all, if Motorola can't get an engraving right, what else could go wrong in the customization process? If the Moto X cannot deliver on offering a wide range of options, then it does not have the specs to compete with the high-end smartphones dominating the market. The Moto X is launching soon, so hopefully Motorola can get it together and fix these quality issues so that the phone can gain some steam and convince even casual consumers to buy, otherwise it will be difficult for the Moto X to compete in the crowded market.

Motorola has claimed that the Moto X can be customized from the ground up. From phone color to lettering and specs, users can create their own Moto X on Motorola's official website.

The Moto X comes with a 720p resolution screen on a 4.7 inch screen, designed to fit comfortably in one hand. The device does not have a quad-core processor that some newer smartphones will have, but rather a dual-core processor. This is to help the battery last as long as possible, and due to the fact that the Moto X's main engineer revealed that quad-core processor smartphones do not use their full processing power most of the time, so they are generally unnecessary.

The Moto X has a release date for AT&T on Aug. 23, and Verizon is rumored to get the device soon afterward.
