Adding to the confusion and disarray of the possible Android 4.2.2 or Android 4.3 updates for the Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note 2, Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus owners in Germany are now receiving the Android 4.2.2 update.
This is the first device in its class in the Samsung device lineup to be updated to Android 4.2.2, according to SamMobile. While in the U.S., Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 owners are waiting for an update that may never come, the German Galaxy S2 Plus is getting build number I9105PXXUBMG8, and now available via the Samsung Kies software updating tool. The Android 4.2.2 update gives German customers lockscreen widgets, daydream screensaver mode, improvements to the status bar, and more.
Meanwhile, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 owners in the U.S. are still waiting for their Android updates, but there could be trouble in the future for the Samsung Galaxy S2. According to Android Community, the Samsung Galaxy S2 may never receive the Android 4.2.2 update, much less the Android 4.3 update, because of problems that Samsung is running into with its proprietary UI. Even though the Samsung Galaxy S2 was on a leaked list of devices that Samsung intended to upgrade to Android 4.2.2, Samsung has reportedly run into "adjustment problems" for the TouchWiz interface on, specifically, the Galaxy S2.
This could leave Samsung Galaxy S2 owners stuck with 4.1.2, while the rest of the older Samsung lineup - the Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, and now Germany's Galaxy S2 Plus - get the Android 4.2.2 update.
However, there may be a ray of hope. AllAboutSamsung.de, the German source that reported the Android 4.2.2 update, notes that the update for the Galaxy S2 Plus could mean one of two things - or both: the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 3 are going to be updated directly to Android 4.3 (while older models get the Android 4.2 update, or none at all).
Or, Samsung is testing the Android 4.2.2 update on a relatively inconsequential phone, to work out the kinks while it prepares for an upcoming U.S. release at some date. The second option leaves room for Samsung Galaxy S2 owners to hope that they might get a (slightly) better operating system someday. And it may mean that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be getting an update soon as well.
