Recent developments have indicated that Samsung might simply skip Android 4.2.2 for the Galaxy S2 and release Android 4.3, and there's now palpable proof that may turn out to be true: a Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.3 has been spotted.
Website Temefy recently reported that Samsung was scrapping the Galaxy S3 Android 4.2.2 update and moving onto Android 4.3. The story was sourced to an unnamed Samsung R&D insider in India.
"The insider also suggests that Samsung might skip the 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Update altogether due the introduction of the Vanilla Experience of Jelly Bean 4.3 in Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition," wrote Temefy.
Well now it seems that the same insider has backed up the claim by sending in an image of a Samsung Galaxy S3 model GT-I9300 running Android 4.3. The Kernel version carries a date of Feb. 19, 2013 and the build number is JDQ47.I9300XXUFMGQ.
According to the insider, Samsung won't be releasing Android 4.3 for the Galaxy S3 until November 2013, meaning it's going to be quite some time before owners of the 2012 flagship device get a new OS to tinker around with.
Bear in mind that the image shown above could be fake, and in response to questioning by a reader in the comments thread, the author of the Temefy article admits as much: "Maybe you are right. Anyway, this could be fake, this could be true. We have no idea. We got info, we posted it."
Google is rumored to reveal Android 4.3 at an event July 24 in San Francisco.
