The New York Yankees are reportedly trying to trade for former pinstripes and current Chicago Cubs slugger Alfonso Soriano, the baseball player's agent disclosed on Wednesday.
Soriano, who won two World Series titles with the Yankees during the early years of his baseball career, said his agent called him about the Yankees' interest in bringing him back to New York.
"My agent sent me a text message telling me the Yankees called and he said [the Cubs] called him," Soriano told ESPN. "If they are getting closer, I will think about it. The president [Theo Epstein] told my agent there was nothing close yet. If we get something close, I want to have time to think about it."
Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said the Yankees are not the first team that inquired about Soriano's availability, but they are the first one that publicly showed their interest in the veteran batter.
Soriano is batting .254 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs this season with the Cubs, who will likely miss the postseason once again after going 45-55 so far this season.
Meanwhile, the Oakland Athletics became the latest team to show interest in trading for Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy.
The A's, the current leader in the American League West, are looking to acquire the White Sox right-handed pitcher as a counter to their division rival Texas Rangers, who recently traded for Cubs' hurler Matt Garza.
Peavy, who went 7-4 with 4.19 ERA and 69 strikeouts this season, is also drawing interest from the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, and the Washington Nationals.
