On Jan. 13th the Golden Globes will hand out awards. The award winners for "Best Film" in Comedy and Drama and the Acting categories should pick up some momentum heading towards the Oscars.
In the history of the Golden Globes, actors who win the Globe usually go on to win the Oscar. For example, last year all four actors who took home the Oscar also went home with the Golden Globe. Meryl Streep won Best Dramatic Actress for "The Iron Lady" while Jean Dujardin won Best Comedy/Musical Actor for his portrayal in "The Artist." The Supporting Actor Prizes went to Christopher Plummer for "Beginners" and Octavia Spencer for "The Help."
The Globes do miss on some occasions and the last time an Oscar winning actor failed to win the Globe was in 2009 when Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler") beat out eventual Oscar winner Sean Penn for "Milk." Kate Winslet won both Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress that year. The Actress category did come with some confusion that year because Winslet's performance for "The Reader" was classified as Supporting at the Globes but at the Oscars she was nominated in the lead category and still managed to win the Oscar.
The best film categories give a certain film the momentum but the Globes have a history of failing to indicate who will eventually win the Best Picture at the Oscars. In their last five ceremonies only two films have both won the Globes and the Oscars. Those films were "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Artist." However the Globes have nominated all the Oscar winning films for their awards.
If Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master") and Anne Hathaway ("Les Miserables") repeat their wins from Thursday's Critics' Choice Awards than the actors will be in good shape to win both the Screen Actor's Guild and the Oscar. However the winner of Best Film will still have to go through the Guild awards for a better indication of the eventual Best Picture Winner.
The Golden Globes will be aired at 8pm on NBC with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey as Hosts.
