One of the running jokes in the video game community is that the next installment in the "Half Life" series is probably not going to happen . . . ever.
Gamers have been waiting since 2004 when "Half Life 2" came out to get a direct sequel in the franchise. In addition, fans have been wondering why Valve hasn't done anything to continue the series, considering that it was one of the most successful games during its time.
According to Vine Report, fans have been waiting for so long that they have done almost everything in their power to find information about the game. Valve has been doing its best to keep any information about the game sealed, but considering the 11-year gap between the games, information is bound to leak from somewhere.
The latest rumor about "Half Life 3" is that the game is currently under development, and that it will be released sooner than most think. The information was supposedly found in a data file that was placed inside another Valve game, "DOTA 2."
The alleged file was named hlg3.txt, which speculators have said to mean "Half-Life 3" game.txt. The file supposedly had release dates as well character names and other sensitive information regarding the game.
However, Game Rant reports that Valve higher ups have debunked the rumor about the file, and that Valve CEO Gabe Newell has expressed his thoughts and urged gamers to continue to be patient.
Newell stated that when running a gaming company, there are several factors that people have to take into consideration and not just straight up game development if the company is to succeed in the long run.
Newell said that the company could just continue to release sequel after sequel to "Half Life" and it would not make anyone happy. Instead, Valve wants to focus on giving players the best game experience available. Games that people thought would not make an impact in the market have now practically cornered console gaming.
Valve continued, saying that they only have the gamers' best interest at heart when developing games that bear their brand name. However, gamers' patience can only hold out for so long before they eventually look elsewhere for their gaming needs.
Many believe that 11 years is almost enough wait for a sequel before believing that it just may never happen.
