Sorry Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners: it's the end of the line. Google announced and released the new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system Thursday, and in the process, the Mountain View search giant confirmed it will no longer update the Galaxy Nexus.
The reason for the stop in support? Well, the Galaxy Nexus is simply too old.
The Google support page for the Galaxy Nexus reads:
"Is Google releasing Android 4.4 as a system update for Galaxy Nexus?
No, Galaxy Nexus phones won't be receiving the update for Android 4.4 (KitKat).
Why isn't Galaxy Nexus receiving the update to Android 4.4?
Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices."
There you have it. As consumers and manufacturers alike are racing to figure out which devices will experience Android 4.4 KitKat, Google has drilled the final nail in the Galaxy Nexus' coffin.
This isn't the end of the line persay, it's just the end of the official line for the Galaxy Nexus. There will undoubtedly be some unofficial custom Android 4.4 KitKat ROMS released over the coming months for the Galaxy Nexus, and loyalists will be sure to support development. After all, the Galaxy Nexus contains 1GB RAM, and Google has made it very clear Android 4.4 KitKat has been optimized for devices with as little as 512MB.
