Jeremy Lin News 2013: Linsanity To Approach This Season With ‘Attack Mentality’ Despite Reduced Role With Houston Rockets
Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin said he's going to approach this coming season with an attack mentality, whether or not he's going to start or play off the bench.
In a recent interview with CNN correspondent Monita Rajpal, Lin talked about the preparation he put in over the summer and the experiment done by his team throughout their preseason campaign.
"Yeah I think we're tweaking, we're experimenting." Lin said. "I think that's the purpose of preseason. But we are experimenting a lot. And from the player's perspective, you work on stuff during the summer and you come in wanting to apply it in-game situation."
Lin enters his second season with the Houston Rockets after signing a three-year, $25.1 million deal in the summer of 2012. Unlike a season ago, the former Harvard hotshot is expected to take a lesser role as a scorer, but he's nevertheless an integral part of the team as their primary playmaker.
The emergence of Patrick Beverley as a solid defender at the point guard spot would also limit Lin's playing time on the court. Nevertheless, he's confident that his aggressive mindset heading into the season will certainly help his play moving forward.
"I think I am learning just to be aggressive, be myself." Lin said. "You know last year, I went through a lot of ups and downs and trying to figure it out how to play within the certain role, certain system."
"I think this year, I know what's going to be like more so I am just trying to go with an attack mentality," added Lin, who averaged 13.4 points, 6.1 assists and 3.0 rebounds last season.
Accepting a Reduced role
Lin logged in 32 minutes per game as the starting point guard for the Houston Rockets last season. But with the Rockets still figuring out the ideal point guard heading into the season, Lin may find himself playing off the bench for the first time since the Linsanity craze erupted in New York.
"We have different strengths," Lin told the Los Angeles Times. "[Beverley] is such a good defender and shooter. I am better with the ball in my hands, attacking. I think that makes us tough to scout, and it gives us the opportunity to give a lot of different looks."
Lin and the Houston Rockets are scheduled to kick off their 2013-14 season against the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday at Toyota Center.
