A 61-year old man has "auto brewery syndrome" which somehow permits him to make beer in his own gut.
According to a report by the National Public Radio, a man from Texas was rushed to the emergency room due to dizziness. When a Breathalyzer was run on him, it was found out that his blood alcohol concentration was 0.37 percent. All would have been well except for the fact that the man claimed he did not drink nor touch any alcohol that day.
Baffled, the doctors isolated the Texas man for 24 hours. He was given only carbohydrate-rich foods and was regularly tested for blood alcohol levels. According to the report, his blood alcohol concentration rose to 0.12 percent at one time - without even consuming any kind of alcohol.
Doctors then found out that the man had an infection with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The infection involves having his very own gut fermenting sugars from starch and turning them into ethanol. Eventually, the man would get drunk - without having to consume any alcohol. Where's the fun in that?
