Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez recently fired shots at Floyd Mayweather Jr and his team by accusing them of forcing him to accept the 152-pound catch-weight in their highly-anticipated light middleweight showdown at MGM Grand Garden on Saturday. However, with his signature already on the contract, the Mexican boxer has nothing to do but to comply with the stipulation.
On Friday at 6 p.m EST, boxing fans will find out the results of roughly three months of intense training for both ring gladiators - at least on their physique. Mayweather, who will return to the light middleweight division after peppering the division's former king Miguel Cotto last year, is expected to easily meet the weight limit.
On the other hand, all eyes will be on the 22-year-old Alvarez as he tips the scale late afternoon. Alvarez, who found the catch-weight stipulation absurd at first before he eventually decided to sign for the biggest fight of his career, will be facing a lot of pressure on Friday even before he steps inside the ring to deal with one of the most accomplished boxers of all time.
Even weeks before the match, Money May's father and trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. said he was aware of Alvarez's struggle to remove excess baggage, crediting what he called 'a mole in the Mexican's training camp for the inside information.'
As expected, Alvarez downplayed the report and assured everyone that he would meet the weight limit a day before the showdown. But the weight issue re-surfaced again after Mayweather told the press about his knowledge of Alvarez's dilemma.
"He's still got a lot of weight to get off. My weight is made. I woke up this morning 150. I know it [about Canelo still needing to drop a ton of weight]. My job as a fighter is to know everything about my opponent I'm facing," said Mayweather, who's gunning for the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine light middleweight title.
The question now is whether Alvarez can make the weight limit of 152 pounds. There's only one way to find out, and that's to watch the weigh-in live in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Also tipping the scales on Friday are Danny Garcia and Lucas Mattysse, who will duke it out for the WBC, WBA and The Ring Light Welterweight belts.
