When the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play Editions came out, they promised the "nexus experience," meaning both handsets would get updates as if they were part of Google's very own brood of smartphones. That has proved to be true, as the most recent Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the Google Play edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 shows.
The newest Android 4.3 update is rolling out to Google Play editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4, as well as the HTC One, and if you own a Google Play Galaxy S4 and HTC One and haven't gotten a notification of an OTA Jelly Bean update yet, you should soon.
The new update is a minor update, which includes security fixes, though Google doesn't specify what for. According to SamMobile, one likely fix is a Bitcoin security vulnerability found in Android. That vulnerability, in Android's underlying cryptography architecture, left an opening for thieves to steal Bitcoins from an app about a month ago. The update likely includes other security patches that Google prefers to keep mum about.
The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is rolling out right now, about two weeks after native Nexus devices began to receive it. The update is marked JWR66Y and should be about 2MB. If you haven't received a notification of the update yet, but want to get it right now, you can go to Settings > About phone > System updates on your Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition to force an update check.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition was released on June 26 with stock Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, meaning that Samsung's TouchWiz UI was not installed. This keeps the Google updates simple to install, and Google Play edition phones generally get Android updates much faster than their OEM cousins.
