An 8-year old bride married to a man 5 times her age died due to internal injuries on her wedding night.
According to Gulf News, the 8-year old girl suffered from severe bleeding and tearing on her genitals. She tied the knot with a 40-year old man through an arranged marriage in Yemen.
The 8-year old girl, identified as "Rawan" died in Hardh, in the governorate of Hajjah in northwestern Yemen. Rawan is one of the many girls in Yemen who are married by families at such young ages.
In Yemen, marrying young children, especially girls, is a socially accepted custom, reports BBC. In a video that went viral weeks ago, another 11-year old girl Nada al-Ahdal told her mother:
"Does it satisfy you for me to be married? Does this satisfy you? Mum, accept this: I don't want you. You killed my dreams, all of them."
Nada al-Ahdal reportedly ran away from home to avoid the impending marriage. 8-year-old Rawan, however, had to lose her life in exchange for it.
