Washington Zoo officials revealed the gender of the second stillborn cub that Mei Xiang delivered in August.
Zoo scientists revealed the result of two genetic tests ran through a protein to determine the gender of the second panda who died moments after birth, indicating that it also corresponded to a female species.
The results published via a statement released by the zoo, and referred to by Terra, reported that Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated after failing natural mating with panda Tian Tian.
