The T-Mobile version of the Google Nexus 4 is getting a mysterious security update over the air (OTA), starting Tuesday. According to PhoneArena, the T-Mobile handset will be getting notifications to download a less than 2MB software package, which is listed under the version number JWR66Y. If you have rooted your Google Nexus 4, you won't be getting the update.
This comes after the last update allowed Google Nexus 4 handsets to upgrade to Android 4.3. That update was number JWR66V and must be installed to get the new security patch. Other Nexus devices are getting the new firmware upgrade as well, including the Galaxy Nexus (yakju variant) and the Google Nexus 10. The Google Nexus 7 is likely to start receiving the JWR66Y T-Mobile security firmware update as well, according to Android Police.
Little is known about what the update is about, so it's presumed that some system exploit in the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update was found and is getting a patch, which means that if you have a Google Nexus 4, Google Nexus 10, or Galaxy Nexus device on T-Moible, it might be a good idea to keep your eye out for the download.
The Google Nexus 4 is last year's hit Google smartphone, which is expected to be followed up this year by the Google Nexus 5 sometime in the coming months. Last year's iteration features a 4.7-inch display with 768 x 1280p resolution, a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, clocked to 1.5Ghz, assisted by 2GB of RAM. The device comes with built-in storage of 8GB (but no microSD card slot for extra storage), along with an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter.
