It seems every week a different electronics manufacturer is tipped to be producing the new Google Nexus 5 handset. Though a strongly knowledgeable source has recently said Motorola would be making the new Google Nexus 5, South Korean media is speculating that it will indeed be LG - and that it will cost the same as a Nexus 4.
Most recently, a reliable Moto X source and industry expert named Taylor Wimberly stated that the Google Nexus 5 was most likely to come from Motorola. On his Google+ page, he said, "Motorola will release a Nexus smartphone in Q4 (that is not the Moto X)." But that flew in the face of previous speculation that the Nexus 5 would be based off of the LG G2, though that prediction also had its logical downsides, especially with the advent of Google Play editions of smartphones. The problem was basically that if Google was going to make a pure Android version of the LG G2, why wouldn't they just make a Google Play edition, rather than a new Nexus?
Now the South Korean source is saying something that makes more sense, given that argument: the LG G2 is indeed going to be a base for the Nexus 5, but there will be big hardware changes in order to meet a price point comparable to the Nexus 4. That, according to SlashGear, means a $300 phone with no contract, which means some pared-down specs, along with (probably) no gimmicky "Rear Key" back button, which is LG's new signature hardware. So now the specs, in order to reach a better price point, look like this:
The Google Nexus 5 may have a 5.2-inch display with 1920 x 1080p resolution, internal storage of 16GB or 32GB, 2GB RAM, no microSD slot, a 13-megapixel camera, 3,000 mAh battery, and no Rear Key. The whole thing would be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor, instead of the high-powered 800 that the LG G2 has.
