Google Nexus 5 Release Date Update: Motorola Tipped to Be Building Google's Phone, Not LG - Release Date in Q4

There's been a new twist in the saga of the Google Nexus 5. Speculations were running rampant about Google leaning on LG to produce the next Nexus handset, and rumors put the new LG G2 as a possible base model for a Google Nexus 5. But a reliable industry expert has said that Motorola may be building the Google Nexus 5, and it may get a release date for the end of the year.

This indeed is a new wrinkle for Google Nexus 5 watchers who were, by and large, anticipating the new device to be something like the LG G2. But Taylor Wimberly, who has been a reliable source before for Moto X news and leaks, and who runs his own tech blog Android and Me, posted on his Google+ page the following: "Motorola will release a Nexus smartphone in Q4 (that is not the Moto X)." Motorola is the wholly owned subsidiary of Google, which just released the Moto X which has gotten some great reviews, despite the fact that it's not a superphone. Now that the company is done with the development of Moto X, perhaps it will go on to the much bigger assignment of creating Google's next flagship handset.

Still, LG may be working on the Nexus handset, as rumored specs almost exactly matched what LG has produced in reality, unveiling the LG G2 earlier this week. The LG G2 has a 5.2-inch HD touchscreen and is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, clocked above 2GHz, at 2.26GHz.

Meanwhile, the Google Nexus 5was rumored to have a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, clocked to 2.3GHz, and a 5.2-inch screen. The only major difference between the two was that the Nexus 5 was supposed to have 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB (that, and some less credible rumors had the camera being a ridiculous 4k video-shooting monster).

If Wimberly's correct, the launch date would still fit with rumors that Google is going to unveil the Nexus 5 around the 5^th birthday of Android, which is in late October. Take this report with a grain of salt, because even an industry expert can be incorrect.
