The Boston Red Sox nailed another solid international pickup after signing a rare two-way player from Dominican Republic, a source close to situation reported on Monday.
The Red Sox, known for developing productive international prospects, hammered out a deal with Yoan Aybar, who was named "Honorable Mention" in Baseball America's list of the 30 top international prospects for 2013.
The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Aybar is considered a 'raw hitting prospect' with great big league upside, though he needs to sharpen his batting for him to be a reliable hitter in the majors.
According to various scouting reports, Aybar has an incredible throwing arm which is strong enough for him to switch from a hitter to a full-time pitcher. If he somehow manages to develop both his batting and pitching, Aybar could be a very potent two-way player in the future.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners signed 16-year old Venezuelan prodigy Luis Rengifo. Baseball America's Ben Badler considered the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Rengifo as a poised switch hitter with impressive bat control and steady live pitching ability.
On the other hand, the Arizona Diamondbacks made a flurry of international signings on Monday after bringing in catcher Jose Herrera, third baseman Josue Herrera and outfielder Francis Martinez. The team also inked Dominican right-handed pitcher Argency Hiciano, Dominican outfielder Jose Lopez and Venezuelan infielder Didimo Bracho.
