A fairly successful smartphone for both Motorola and new parent company Google, the highly customizable Moto X has attracted many users with its wide range of color schemes. Now, it looks like Motoroloa will attempt to bankroll that success with a new budget version of the popular device—the Moto DVX.
According to Android Police, the Moto DVX was confirmed at a meeting with Republic Wireless, and was tipped for release sometime in October. The company already offers to Moto X phone to customers off contract for $299, or $100 more for a two-year contract with service providers such as Verizon Wireless and Sprint. The unlocked Developer Edition of the Moto X is available for $649.
To make the Moto DVX significantly cheaper, it looks as though Motorola will drastically reduce the phone's customizable features. Android Police's leak indicates that the Moto DVX will have four backplates that users can swap out. The Verge also indicates that the phone is rumored to lack LTE support to cut costs further.
In addition to these leaks concerning the Moto DVX, the first photo leak of these new interchangeable backplates has emerged courtesy of Chinese website Weibo. The photo shows two of the backplates that are allegedly for the Moto DVX. The backplates are green and purple, and look flatter and cheaper compared to the backplates attached to the regular Moto X.
So far, very little is known about the Moto DVX. Motorola has yet to make an announcement about the device and the only service provider currently attached to the device is Republic Wireless. The specs for the device will most likely be a step down from the Moto X, but the price be low enough to persuade users to give the phone a try.
While Motorola is preparing to release new versions of the Moto X, many are wondering when the company will expand the customization options for the phone to different service providers. So far, only AT&T customers are able to access the full range of color options for the Moto X.
