The Battlefield and Call of Duty series have had one of the most intense rivalries of the current generation of consoles, and the trend looks as though it will continue into the next generation of consoles. Both franchises have a new game in the pipeline for both current and next-gen consoles (Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty: Ghosts, respectively), and publishers EA Games and Activision have revealed that users can buy the games on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and then trade in the games (while retaining all of their profile data) for the next-gen versions at discounted prices. Let's take a look at exactly how EA Games and Activision differ on their trade-in programs for their flagship franchises.
In a blog post, EA's COO Peter Moore revealed several new details about Battlefield 4, including information about the trade-in program for the game. Moore said that certain retailers will allow users to buy the game on the current crop of consoles, and then once the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are released users can trade in their Battlefield 4 copy for the next-gen console version of their choosing for as low as $10. This will allow users to gain experience in the game and build up stats on the current generation of consoles before continuing their profile on the new consoles.
Activision will also have a similar program for Call of Duty: Ghosts, but will take their trade-in program a bit further. According to Gamespot, for a limited period of time every single Call of Duty: Ghosts title on the PlayStation 3 will include a code that will allow owners to purchase the digital copy of the game for the PlayStation 4 for $10. Those who buy the digital copy of the game on the PlayStation 3 will automatically qualify for this offer, which lasts until March 31, 2014. As for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Activision will offer the game as a package deal, with both versions of the game as a single package at a suggested price of $70. The digital copy of the game for the Xbox 360 will also be eligible to upgrade to the Xbox One for an additional $10. The game's season pass for DLC will also transfer between consoles as well.
