The well documented struggles and possible suspension of Alex Rodriguez only tell us that it's time for the slugger to quit, not only with the New York Yankees, but also his baseball career.
Coming off his second hip surgery in his career, Rodriguez has been nothing but miserable in his minor league rehab stint so far. On Tuesday, A-Rod continued to struggle at the plate as he went 0-for-3 in Tampa.
All of a sudden, one of the most dangerous hitters in the game has been reduced to an easy target by minor league pitchers, casting a cloud of doubt on A-Rod's ability to perform at high level in the twilight years of his baseball days.
But the worst has yet to come for Rodriguez. With MLB close to slapping suspensions on players involved in the infamous Biogenesis doping scandal, Rodriguez's career might be in great jeopardy.
According to a report by the Daily News, the Yankees slugger is scheduled to meet MLB investigators in connection to the Biogenesis scandal and suspension will likely follow.
Sources reported that the MLB is preparing to suspend 22 players with Rodriguez and Milwaukee Brewers batter Ryan Braun likely sitting out for 100 games.
Yankees co-owner Hank Steinbrenner remains supportive of his prized batter, believing the Yankees really need A-Rod to get themselves back in title hunt.
"You don't come back from two hip surgeries - of course he had the one before and now the newest one - it's not like when you're off all that time and then, bam, you're hitting the s--- out of the ball. It doesn't work that way. He'll work his way back into it. He seems nice and relaxed and really wants to come back. We'll see what happens. We could certainly use him you know?," said Steinbrenner.
The Yankees (48-42), despite the injuries on their key players, are still in contention for the top spot in the American League East. However, with its core group becoming more and more injury prone, the Yankees need to start cleaning the house and add pieces for their future campaigns. To make this rebuilding plan into reality, the Yankees have to separate themselves from A-Rod. Apparently, there's no better time to say bye-bye than now.
As for Rodriguez, he now needs to put his career and everything to rest. He has done a lot for the game and absorbed tons of criticism because of his association with doping. Honestly, it might be the right time for A-Rod to say "I quit."
