"Light Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" is the latest attempt by Square Enix to appease rabid fans that have been waiting for "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" since 2006.
However, according to IGN, the title does not feel like a true iteration of the famous franchise.
Writer Luke Karmali notes that "With a whole host of changes to party make-up, skill acquisition and, most noticeably, combat all being introduced, it's obvious that Square Enix's dev team is trying to evolve the systems of Final Fantasy XIII-2 into something more palatable for those who haven't played the original Final Fantasy XIII." Among the major changes Karmali is referring to is the emphasis on the female protagonist Lightning. As a result, players do not have large parties, but only get to control Lightning in combat. Turn-based battles are replaced by real-time action and players can now move Lightning about during the combat. As Karmali puts it, "static combats are a thing of the past."
In an interview with Japanese publication Kotaku, director Motomu Toriyama notes that the decision to emphasize one character was because "we wanted the players to become attached to her as she fights against these enemies, and going through the troubles of trying to beat her enemies."
The game is slated for an autumn 2013 release date. Watch the trailer for the title below.
