Gamers rejoice! The hotly anticipated sequel to the hit mobile game Temple Run will be available later tonight for free in the U.S. Apple App store. Right now the game is available on the other side of the world - New Zealand - where a writer for Touch Arcade, Jared Nelson, has already downloaded it and given it a try.
After playing the game for a day, Nelson says Temple Run 2 is a "true and proper sequel" to the original. Apparently the controls - swipes and tilts which control your jumping and diving character - are still the same, as is the game's conceit: You're still an idol-stealing freebooter who has to run away from angry demonic primates and collect coins and powerups while you make your way out of the temple.
According to Nelson and his screenshots however, the new Temple Run 2 has updated, gorgeous (for an iPhone app) visuals and a more fluid environment, allowing for less rickety gameplay. Nelson: "Temple Run 2's environments are curvy and hilly, giving everything a more natural and 'real' feel."
In addition, the new game has parts where you'll be zipping down ziplines or controlling a mine cart, and there are four new characters - each with his or her own upgradeable abilities - for players to control. Even without the upgrades, Temple Run 2 would have likely become a hit simply because it's a sequel to one of the most popular iOS apps in 2012. With more than 75 million downloads, Temple Run was a hit.
Look for Temple Run 2 to hit the Apple App Store sometime around 11pm EST, says Nelson.
