Samsung had an incredible 2012, and the electronics manufacturer looks like it will be upping the stakes in 2013. Samsung has just unveiled an eight-core processor that could power its flagship Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 handsets.
The Exynos 5 Octa chipset utilizes a total of eight cores that will make it the most powerful mobile processor on the market when it starts shipping in devices. Samsung has shoved four ARM Cortex-A15 chips together for high-end performance, and four Cortex-A7 chips that will take care of grunt work and provide better battery life. Samsung also stated that the Exynos 5 Octa chipset delivers twice the 3D performance of any previous chipset, including the quad-core Exynos 4.
With this kind of firepower, the Exynos 5 Octa will be initially featured only high-end products. Samsung has publicly made it clear it wants to rely less on other manufacturers, such as Qualcomm, for components, and using an Exynos 5 Octa chipset in its next flagship smartphones is a great way to prove that.
Nothing official about the Galaxy S4 has been revealed by Samsung, but all signs indicate the South Korean company will be holding a launch event sometime between March and May. The handset should then release before the beginning of summer.
The Galaxy S4 is also believed to be equipped with a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB RAM, Android 4.2. One rumor states that the Galaxy S4 could even come with an S Pen stylus, like the Galaxy Note series.
Not much is known about the Galaxy Note 3, except that it is rumored to come with an even-more-massive 6.3-inch display. Expect the latest version of Android and the S Pen to also ship with the phablet.
What do you think? Will the eight-core Exynos 5 make it into the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3?
