Toshiba's latest efforts to introduce a rapid-fire, refocus-enabled camera may reach smartphones and tablets by the end of 2013, according to an Asahi Shimbun report (via SlashGear).
The technology allows for 500,000 pictures to be taken in a single take with different settings, giving users options to tinker with the final product and eliminate out-of-focus pictures from their library. The report notes that the camera is 1cm square, features a 5x7mm sensor, and 0.33mm lenses,
In its review round-up, SlashGear concludes that the previous iteration of Toshiba's Lytro technology was "a very interesting, if somewhat niche first-gen product, with plenty of appeal for gadget-lovers and those wanting a unique take in their photography, but also with its fair share of flaws. Many reviewers suggested that the technology would be far more compelling if integrated into a smartphone."
While no devices in particular were pegged for potential homes of Toshiba's camera, more information will undoubtedly become available as 2013 moves forward.
