The next big thing in smartphones could very well be flexible displays, and it looks like they aren't that far off. Samsung looks set to debut a pair of new flexible displays at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and could have smartphone with a flexible screen out sometime in 2013.

According to the folks over at SamMobile, Samsung will be showing off a 5.5-inch flexible display with a resolution of 1280X720, and a 55-inch flexible screen for televisions. Apparently, the screens can't be completely rolled up, but you should still be able to bend them.

The 2013 CES runs from Jan.8-11.

Sounds futuristic doesn't it? Being able to fold up a smartphone sounds like fun, but the 1280X720 resolution on the 5.5-inch screen is a little disappointing, as that means the display won't be 1080p. Handsets such as the HTC Droid DNA already sport 1080p screens, and plenty more are expected in 2013, including Samsung's own Galaxy S4. It seems that flexible screens may need a year or two to get the crisp high definition that a lot of people are coming to expect.

A report released at the end of November by BBC stated that flexible smartphones should begin hitting the market in 2013. The report also went on to say that Samsung is widely expected to be the first electronics manufacturer to release such a device.

Flexible screens are not only appealing due to their novelty and space-saving implications, but also because they are known to be incredibly durable, and should help decrease the number of device deaths due to physical injury.
