The future is really here - sort of.
Mark Zuckerberg is setting the bar in technology once again. Clearly, he's already known for breaking barriers on the internet with Facebook, but he's not stopping there.
The Facebook founder has made it a goal to build a digital assistant in 2016, possibly a real-life, artificially intelligent assistant akin to Jarvis in "Iron Man."
However, according to Tech Crunch, what Zuckerberg plans to build isn't exactly Jarvis but "just" an AI assistant to help him run his businesses more efficiently. Jarvis was just the best example he could think of to explain his goal.
In his Facebook post announcing his 2016 New Year's resolution, the social media founder said:
"My personal challenge for 2016 is to build a simple AI to run my home and help me with my work. You can think of it kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man.
I'm going to start by exploring what technology is already out there. Then I'll start teaching it to understand my voice to control everything in our home - music, lights, temperature and so on. I'll teach it to let friends in by looking at their faces when they ring the doorbell. I'll teach it to let me know if anything is going on in Max's room that I need to check on when I'm not with her. On the work side, it'll help me visualize data in VR to help me build better services and lead my organizations more effectively."
AI is fast becoming part of everyday life and not just for the movies any longer.
While no longer a surprise for Zuckerberg standards, the news is certainly a notch higher in the tech bar standards.
As TIME said in its report, Zuckerberg has been known to set for himself tough challenges and really do them. He already conquered the challenge of learning Mandarin, reading two books in a month, promoting equality, as well as solving global internet access, albeit controversially.
This new Mark Zuckerberg project is in no way easily achievable, that's for sure, but it would be interesting to see how it turns out. Maybe, just maybe, we could even see Iron Man's full suit in real-life action sometime in the future.
I wonder what the Facebook founder's next New Year endeavour will be.
In any case, this certainly makes any other New Year's goal look easy. Thanks a lot, Mark Zuckerberg!
