Tom Cruise's career has often been overlooked thanks in part to the attention he garners on Tabloids. However, it seems that his latest film Jack Reacher might be the director's first major hit in years.
Last year's Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was a box office success and well received by critics, but the film was part of an established franchise. However, Reacher is a vehicle specifically for Cruise with no prior history. The film's success depends mainly on his star power, which has been waning for years. Early reviews for the film are positive and out of seven reviews published on Rotten Tomatoes, six are positive.
The Hollywood Reporter's odd McCarthey notes that "Cruise is in top form" and reaped compliments on other cast members. He also praises the action set pieces.
Blake Howard of 2UE That Movie Show stated that "Jack Reacher is an above average crime thriller and it could be the beginning of a beautiful collaboration between McQuarrie and Cruise." Critic Matthew Pejkovic also praised Cruise's performance and noted that is intensity "a refreshingly old school, stylish and brutally violent murder mystery."
The one negative review came from Variety's Peter Debruge and concludes that while Cruise has the presence, the character is confused and ultimately unsatisfying.
The film comes out wide in theaters on December 21, 2012.
