The Broadcast Critics announced their nominations for the best films of 2012 on Tuesday morning.
While not completely surprising, a few films continued to mount awards buzz, while some others continued to lose it. The awards have always been a solid indicator of which films will eventually score Oscar nominations.
Last year, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was nominated for Best Picture by the BFCA despite the film getting no recognition from other societies and circles. The film eventually landed a Best Picture nomination. Back in 2008, the society surprisingly picked The Reader as one of the top ten best pictures and it eventually ousted The Dark Knight as the fifth Best Picture of that year.
Lincoln and Les Miserables solidified their Best Picture chances as the former took in a record 13 nominations while the latter took home 11. Lincoln has long been in a lock to compete for the top prize and while Les Miserables was seen early on as a top contender, it has lost steam as of late due to losses in other critic circles as well due to poor initial reviews. Argo (seven nominations) and Life of Pi (nine nominations) also solidified their positions as Best Picture nominees.
The Supporting Actor's race, which has been a scramble throughout, continued to raise questions as Javier Bardem and Matthew McConaughey garnered surprising nominations over Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz from Django Unchained.
Quentin Tarantino's Django also saw a Best Picture nomination indicating that despite no reviews being published, the critics are happy with the film. The Dark Knight Rises took a big hit despite obtaining four nominations because three of those nominations were in the Action movie category, none of which are actual Oscar categories. It only got nominated for Best Visual Effects and it looks like its momentum from being on the AFI's Top ten list may have been short lived. More importantly, the BCFA nominated its predecessor The Dark Knight for Best Picture back in 2008 and their exclusion of TDKR is very telling of critics' attitudes toward the film's Oscar chances.
