It has only been a few weeks since Android 6.0 Marshmallow was officially launched. Although Android M is still rolling out to numerous devices, rumors about Android N already began circulating.

NDTV revealed that the next Android OS update will most likely begin with the letter “N,” considering how Google has the custom of naming new releases alphabetically and based on desserts. Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google, talked to students in New Delhi, India, to talk about the future of the company’s software.

Pichai said that Google will may arrange an online poll to choose the next name of their upcoming Android release. There is a possibility that the next name will be based on an Indian dessert, provided that all Indians join the poll and vote, Pichai said.

Phone Arena noted that Android versions have been named after sweet treats starting with the Android 1.5 Cupcake. People have already started speculating the next name, which includes nougat, Nutella (which is actually a trademarked name, like Android KitKat) and nut bread, among others. Android N may be called version 6.1 and is expected to launch before the second half of 2016.

Android Pit wrote that Android 6.0 Marshmallow was announced in March 2015 at Google I/O and released in November 2015. A lot of fans started predicting the name as soon as the announcement was made, with some guessing right after Google presented a statue on its grounds of a robot with a marshmallow.

Android Police stated that Google presented Android version statues at its Mountain View headquarters to boost anticipation. The nicknames have become quite effective in terms of branding and promotional activities. Google might follow the same approach by introducing the next version in the first quarter of 2016 and releasing the update several months later. Minor updates will take faster to become available.

Pichai proceeded to talk about his first mobile phone and how many phones he currently has. The tech executive revealed that he now has about two three dozen phones. He also talked about the growing start-up culture in India and his love for sports, particularly soccer and cricket. He added that he would still be building software regardless of his other interests. The question-and-answer session lasted over an hour at Delhi University.

More updates and details on Sundar Pichai’s plans for the Indian tech market, as well as Android N are set to surface in the coming months.
