Nexus Devices Start Getting Android M 6.0.1 Update [Release Date, Features & Download]

With the rollout of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow still unable to cover most of the latest devices to date, Nexus device owners can now look forward to getting the next patch with reports of the Android M 6.0.1 now already rolling out.

Aside from the usual security updates (for December) and performance updates that new Android OS carry, a highlight for Android 6.0.1 M appears to be the revamped emojis which will part of the new rollout.

There are over 200 new revampled emojis based on Unicode 8 to expect, something which can be viewed in full via the Unicode website.

Also to be expected with Android 6.0.1 M is a new Google Keyboard which should now be able to unlock hidden emojis that could not be used before. A lot of those included the country flags which may now be easier to access along with the rearranged layout.

There are now 10 tabs for emoji instead of seven, with "flags," "sports," and "food" now getting their own tabs as revealed by Ars Technica.

Aside from that, there are more visual changes to look forward to when using tablets for browsing.

Android 6.0.1 will bring changes to the nav bar where the buttons will no longer be centered. The back and home buttons have been relocated to the left-most portion of the screen with the overview (or recent apps) button sitting on the right-most portion.

Seeing the major changes when it comes to navigational browsing and all, Android users may find it difficult to use in the first couple of tries. However and as with any other changes made on devices, folks are bound to get used to it in the long run.

So what else is there to look forward to with the Android 6.0.1?

A look over at the Android Police says that other updates that Android 6.0.1 M brings include that of the double-tap power camera launch shortcut for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 and Nexus 9. The said feature was only present with the Nexus 5X and 6P when both devices debuted.

With regards to the security update, worth noting are the issues that involved critical security vulnerabilities as mentioned via NDTV. This includes addressing the issue of allowing remote code execution on affected devices through multiple methods like via email, web browsing, and MMS.

For reference purposes, the update carries the build number MMB29K though the Nexus 6P and Nexus Player have factory images of build MMB29M.

Similar to other Android OS releases, the update should be made available soon for Nexus 5, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 9 owners. Just keep tabs with the phone settings to check if the update is ready for download on your end.
