The Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One have been in the market for just two years. However, fans are already talking about the potential release of their successors.
Techspot stated that the usual lifecycle of top gaming consoles is about seven years in the mainstream, and then another three years before being retired permanently. But, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two are expected to deviate from the regular cycle and launch earlier than usual for a number of reasons.
First, 4K resolution is quickly gaining momentum among users, more televisions and mobile devices are introducing 4K resolution as a staple, but the current gaming consoles do not have enough power to support 4K gaming. Most games still rely on 3D. Second, virtual reality is also being introduced by a number of companies, which means that current gaming systems are at risk for becoming obsolete if new hardware are introduced, which includes the new technology.
Based on a report by Geek.com, there are rumors that AMD is offering new hardware to Sony and Microsoft, which is reportedly five times more powerful than their current consoles. At present, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One incorporate custom AMD hardware featuring Jaguar-based architecture, allowing the devices to transfer to an x86 build for simpler game development. If both companies agree to work with AMD again, backward compatibility is expected to still be available due to the x86 architecture.
ValueWalk noted that if the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One maintain its current lifecycle, then the next versions will be available in 2020. However, an optimization to 4K support might feature their successors sometime in 2018. A number of game titles are also expected to launch on the next-generation consoles when these become available.
Furthermore, reports are saying that Sony has been looking for a number of individuals who can work at Sony Computer Entertainment America. Many speculate that the job is highly connected with developing the Sony PlayStation 5. Sony is particularly looking for a senior game programmer who will lead research and development for the next-generation gaming console. Due to the recent listing, several fans were excited with rumors that Sony is probably developing the PlayStation 5 already, International Business Times wrote.
Sony and Microsoft have not yet commented on the issue. More updates and details on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two are expected in the following months.
