Barely a quarter after the iPhone 6S and the 6S Plus was released, rumors of the next iteration are already making the rounds in cyberspace with increasing frequency.

As early as now, it's been reported that the iPhone 7 may have 2 new features that will distinguish it from the current model - waterproofing and 3GB RAM, as reported by GSM Arena.

"These are supposed to be the defining new features of the next iPhones," the site added. "However, it's possible that only the iPhone 7 Plus will get its memory bumped up."

If indeed these reports turn out to be legit, it will appear that the upcoming iteration will be Apple's first waterproof smartphone. This, however, may seem a delayed move as a number of Android phones already have this feature for some time now.

Further, research firm TrendForce reportedly revealed that there may be a new 4-inch Apple phone next year, around the second quarter of 2016. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will allegedly be launched in the second half of 2016, as is the Cupertino-based company's usual flagship release timeframe.

Aside from being waterproof and having a bigger RAM, some rumors said that the upcoming model may be "the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever produced at around 6mm," Know Your Mobile's Richard Goodwin noted, adding that this is around the same dimension as current iPod Touch units.

"Whether making the next iPhones thinner is a good idea or not remains to be seen," Goodwin opined. "Personally, I already find my iPhone 6 Plus way too thin -- I'd definitely prefer something a tad more substantial, as I am constantly dropping it while out and around."

Further, reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo debunked speculations over Apple adopting AMOLED in the future by saying that it won't happen for the next three years and that a major supplier for iPhone backlighting, Minebea, told investors earlier this month that "it does not foresee risk of TFT-LCD share loss to AMOLED in high-end smartphone market in next three years & guides growth in TFT-LCD going forward," as noted by MacRumors.

"As Apple and Samsung are the only two brands that currently offer premium smartphones, we think Minebea's statements imply it does not expect iPhone to adopt AMOLED in the coming three years, given that Samsung's models are already being equipped with it," Kuo was quoted as saying.
