The two hottest smartphones with under-5-inch displays on the market right now are the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Google-branded LG Nexus 4. Both are at the top of their class, but both smartphones offer different strengths, and before going with which one is newer, here are some factors to look at.

The Nexus 4 is newer, granted, but remember this also means it's harder to get. There's no way to get one through the Google Play before 2013, and T-Mobile's offering comes with a two-year contract attached. As usual, third-party retailer are offering the smartphone at higher prices. The Galaxy S3, however, is plentiful, and with a two-year contract can cost up to $250 less. You just have to search around for deals on the Samsung handset, of which there are plenty.

The Galaxy S3, while easier to find, does have another drawback - the time it takes to receive Android updates. The Nexus 4 receives the latest version straight from Google, which is why it currently runs Android 4.2. The Galaxy S3 has to wait until Samsung tailors a build, then if the Galaxy S3 is carrier-tied, has to wait even longer for carriers to roll out a build. International Galaxy S3s are just receiving Android 4.1.2, and those in the United States still haven't seen a complete rollout of Android 4.1.1. (where are you Verizon?). This is one of the most appealing aspects of Google Nexus devices, which keep an Android fan at the cusp of Android technology.

Unlike the Nexus 4, the Galaxy S3 has LTE capabilities here in the United States. The Nexus 4 does have a dormant LTE chip inside of it, but even with a software tweak, only works on Band 4 (T-Mobile's future LTE band). If LTE is a deciding factor, then the Galaxy S3 is a clear winner.

The Galaxy S3 has a 4.8-inch display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy S3's RAM and processor vary through variants. The Nexus 4 features a slightly smaller 4.7-inch display, an 8-megapixel rear shooter, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.

Both phones sport sleek designs, and their specs ensure they will be relevant for quite some time to come. If LTE is a deal breaker, then the Galaxy S3 is one of your best options. If having the latest version of Android is most important, the Nexus 4 is the cream of the crop. Just keep in mind you'll have to either hunt, wait, or pay higher for it.
