The Galaxy Note 3 Neo is getting the Android 5.1.1 update soon, thanks to a rollout by Samsung and a custom ROM by Phronesis.
"The update is currently rolling out in the company's home country of South Korea, where it is available both OTA and via KIES for model numbers SM-N750L, SM-N750K, and SM-N750S," GSM Arena said late in October this year. "Other regions as well as models are expected to get it in the coming weeks."
In another report, Neurogadget said that custom ROM developer community Phronesis "just released the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop for Samsung's Galaxy Note 3."
"The new firmware will boost the user experience on the Galaxy Note 3 with a new visual UI, tweaked performance and other new features," the site added. "The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop by Phronesis is well known for its power optimization, sound control options, improved battery life, and animation."
This update is specifically suited for the LTE Note 3 N9005 model. To check whether you have the right unit, tap settings, then go to about phone to see the model number of your device.
If you have the right unit, you'll need to clear your phone's memory first to accommodate the update. You should also backup all data in your handset to avoid losing precious information after installing the update.
"Make sure the PC has USB driver software, or else the device (Galaxy Note 3) will not be recognised by the computer," International Business Times also advised. "Make sure the device has more than 80% battery, or else there is chance of the smartphone getting temporarily bricked if the installation process is interrupted midway."
You can download the USB driver software here.
Do remember that the installation of the Phronesis Android OS update will nullify the company warranty of your phone. As such, your carrier or the unit's manufacturer, Samsung, won't be liable to send updates in the future.
"Users can restore warranty by flashing the device with stock-ROM," IBT said.
To download the Phronesis update, follow this link to begin. You'll download the update via zip file for the Note 3. You should also have downloaded Google Apps before beginning the download.
"Connect Samsung Galaxy Note 3 LTE N9005 to the PC via USB cord," IBT went on. "Place Android 5.1.1 Lollipop zip file and Google Apps .zip file into the phone's SD card memory."
"Users are advised to paste the .zip file in SD card root, not in any other folder," the news portal added. "Before installing the custom software, ensure that the device has been rooted and has ClockworkMod Recovery tool installed."
Then, turn the unit off and disconnect it from the computer. Activate the recovery mode by pressing and holding the volume, home, and power buttons. Then, clear phone memory via the "wipe data/factory reset" option.
Clear cache memory by tapping on "wipe cache partition" and return to ClockworkMod recovery. Check "advanced" and "wipe dalvik cache."
Return to the main recovery screen and select "install zip from SD card."
"Tap 'choose zip from sdcard' and go to Android 5.1.1 ROM .zip file in SD card and enter the installation process. Repeat the same procedure to install Google Apps," IBT relayed.
After the installation has been done, go back and restart your phone via "reboot system now" on the recovery menu. Wait for a few minutes for your device to finish booting up.
Check whether the installation was successful by looking into about phone for the Android OS version.
