With a lot of Samsung devices starting to get the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, there are probably a lot of owners out there with the Samsung Galaxy S4 eager to find out when they will get their own OTA update.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 came out with Android 4.2.2 Jellybean out of the box way back in 2013 but can be updated up to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The initial word was that the device may likely be excluded from getting an Android 6.0 M bump but Samsung decided to include it anyway.

With the long wait and for folks who are eager to upgrade their OS, Android 5.1.1 could be a consolation for now.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 was among the devices chosen to get an Android 5.1.1 bump last month, a bit of a surprise considering that many had already discounted it since it has been around for quite some time and the fact that Android updates were somehow limited to the newer devices.

Prior to the surprise release, Team Radium developed a custom ROM using the Cyanogen Mod to help inject Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on the Galaxy S4.

The only thing there is that the folks who had opted to go the custom Rom route had to have their phones rooted and that their devices required a power level of at least 70%. Apparently with the installation process expected to take a long time to accomplish, such was the reason to make sure that the device was properly juiced.

For the ones who were able to apply Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, such should be safe for now. But of course, the wait for the Android 6.0 M is still an interest though the time element comes into play seeing that rolls outs are just starting.

Looking into the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the update should work out just fine. The Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with internal specs that include an Exynos 5 Octa 5410 quad core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A15 processor and 2 GB of RAM which are seen as proven from users who were able to install it successfully via the custom ROMs.

As far as the long wait for the Android 6.0 M is concerned, it may be wise to take note that like previous OTA updates, it is far from perfect. Bugs are still reportedly around, so users can expect more releases that will try to stabilize it once it does come out.
