Finding it hard to lift your cheek off your pillows in the mornings? This face-slapping alarm clock may be the solution.
Simone Giertz, an electronics buff, had recently announced she had made herself an alarm clock that can slap you on the face once the alarm is activated.
"The Wake-Up Machine is a DIY wall-mounted robot that you position above your head," CNET described. "When the alarm goes off, a rubber arm whips around, slapping you until you get up and get out of the way."
Giertz helpfully provided a video that informed viewers how she made the contraption and even how the thing works. And it does work.
"The arm started off as a Halloween prop; Giertz cleaned off the fake blood to make it a little less terrifying," the tech news site said. "She then built connections between an alarm clock, an Arduino controller and a relay."
"When the alarm trips, it signals a motor to start up. The motor powers the arm, sending it whipping around," it went on. "The whole thing is housed in a metal box that held bandages."
With such a face-slapping device, you'll see that you can't sleep in or extend your snooze time as you'll have to deal with the annoying pummeling of the hand prop to avoid getting minor injuries. In Giertz's case, she got her long blonde hair tangled in the clock's motor - a painful and embarrassing experience that would probably teach her to promptly rise from bed as soon as the first slap lands.
This is not the only contraption Giertz has churned out. She had also built a self-toothbrushing helmet and assembled a robot that can feed you breakfast.
Further, the houseboat-living YouTuber's creation isn't the only unconventional alarm clock in existence. There have been other types that get users to do a variety of things in order to effectively wake up once the alarm is tripped.
There's one called Clocky that can roll out of sight and even hides itself once the alarm goes off. You'll have to rise and chase it around before you can stop it from continually beeping "random patterns" - and potentially waking up those in neighboring rooms or roommates in the process.
Then there's another one that would require you to do 10 bicep curls before it can be deactivated. And another one that would make your bed shake once the alarm goes off.
