Google just announced the dates for its famed I/O conference for 2013. The event will be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco and will run from May 15-17. If the past holds true, this could be when Google pulls the curtains back on Android 5.0 'Key Lime Pie.'
Google's I/O conference is generally where Google unleashes its high profile announcements. This year revealed Android 4.1 Jelly Bean alongside new devices such as the ASUS Nexus 7 tablet and Project Glass from Google. In 2011, Google took the time to give everybody a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. More likely than not, Android 5.0, nicknamed 'Key Lime Pie,' will finally be previewed at Google I/O 2013.
While the new features will surely be exciting, this may come as a disappointment to many Android users out there, who are still struggling to keep their devices up to date (unless they are using a Google-branded Nexus device). Most devices are still running Android Gingerbread, and Jelly Bean still barely commands a 6 percent market share. Android 5.0 will only make many Android users feel their OS is outdated.
Still, there's evidence that Google will plow ahead with its Android updates, regardless of whether or not manufacturers and carriers can keep up. Android 5.0 has already been spotted in the wild, and a recent comic by a Google employee indicates the street name may indeed be 'Key Lime Pie.'
The comic, pictured above, shows the evolution of Android, much like famous March of Progress illustration released back in 1965. It depicts the Android logo creature slowly walking more erect and holding each respective Android's nickname: Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. The last one can be interpreted as Key Lime Pie.
Of course, none of this is official, and unless Google formally acknowledges Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie anytime soon, we'll most likely have to wait until Google's I/O conference in 2013 for concrete specifics.
