A different kind of smartphone recently emerged on Kickstarter. Pre-ordering of the Nextbit Robin handset is currently available after it was successfully funded on the crowdfunding site.
Engadget reported that the Nextbit Robin will come in mint or midnight color. The boxy smartphone was first funded on Kickstarter and is currently available for regular pre-orders via BackerKit. The device has a unique look and a special take on software. Particularly, the Robin features 32GB of internal storage, with an additional 100GB on the cloud. When users begin to run out of storage space, the Robin will automatically transfer seldom-used apps and content into the online storage space, so that users do not have to eliminate data manually.
Gizbot cited that the key specifications of the Nextbit Robin include a 5.2-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels and Gorilla Glass protection, a 2GHz hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear shooter with flash and a 5-megapixel front camera, and a 2680mAh non-removable battery. NDTV cited that the device measures 149mm x 72mm x 7mm. It also has a variety of connective capabilities such as Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, 4G, LTE, 4.0 LE and USB Type-C. The Robin has various sensors, such as a compass, magnetometer, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor. The Robin will most likely release with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.
On its Kickstarter page, the makers described Robin as the only cloud-first smartphone.
“It gets smarter every day and makes running out of space history.” the webpage stated.
The project was supported by 3,611 backers, who pledged a total of over $1.3 million to start production. The device was released in August 2015. Those who supported the Kickstarter project were able to avail of the Nextbit Robin for $299. Pre-orders for the Android flagship model are now available at $399.
Earlier in October 2015, Nextbit celebrated its third anniversary. The company shared their excitement in bringing Robin to Australia, add a third colorway – Electric, and launch a second CDMA compatible version. Previously, the backers voted and chose the third color, which was inspired by Jordan Collins and Eric Chu. The people behind the upcoming device took the time to thank their supporters and look forward to the big launch of the Nextbit Robin.
More updates and details on the Nextbit Robin smartphone are expected in the coming weeks. The phone is set to launch in the first quarter of 2016, BGR reported.
