Apple's iPad will be in the eyes of many but there are other tablets to consider.
They are considered best as alternatives holding a traditional book, but between Amazon's Kindle Fire HD and Barnes & Noble's Nook HD, which could be a viable opponent to Apple.
Display:
The Kindle Fire HD features a seven-inch screen size with 1,280x800 pixels at 216 pixels per inch (ppi) while the Nook HD also shares the same screen size but at 1,440x900 pixel resolution and at 243 ppi.
Frame Size and Weight:
The Nook HD has a height of 7.65-inches, width of five-inches, and a depth of 0.43-inches while weighing 11.1-ounces. The Kindle Fire HD has a height of 7.60-inches, width of 5.39-inches, and a depth of 0.41-inches with weight of 13.93-ounces.
Internal Storage and Memory:
The Kindle Fire HD tablet offers 16GB and 32GB storage models with 1GB of RAM. The Nook HD offers 8GB and 16GB storage models with 1GB of RAM as well.
When it comes to the microSD card slot, the Amazon tablet does not offer it but the Barnes & Noble tablet does with up to 32GB of storage.
Camera:
The Kindle Fire HD offers a front-facing camera of 1.3-megapixels, 1,280x1,024 pixels. The Nook HD does not offer camera capabilities.
Wireless Connectivity:
The Kindle Fire HD offers access to Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, and USB version 2.0. The Nook HD also offers Bluetooth and USB version 2.0, but only Wi-Fi 801.11 b/g/n.
Operating System:
The two tablets utilize the Android operating system. The Ice Cream Sandwich, also known as the Android version 4.0, comes installed in the Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD.
Colors:
The Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD are only available in black.
Prices:
The Kindle Fire HD's starting price is $199 for the 16GB unit and $249 for the 32GB.
The Nook HD has a starting price at $199 for the 8GB model and $229 for the 16GB model.
