The sequel to the Bronze Award winning game "Sonic Dash" has been announced to be nearly complete by Japanese game developer Sega.

App Trigger reports that the sequel will be called "Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boo," which will be an endless runner similar to that of the first "Sonic Dash" game. However, Sega promises that there will be new features and gameplay in the sequel that were not featured in the original.

"Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom" will have three distinct characters that the players must switch in and out during the course of the game to advance themselves through the course. According to Pocket Gamer UK, these characters will allow players to dash, swing and fly across the levels and that using these abilities will be essential to moving forward in the game. While there is no confirmation on any other character being in the game save Sonic, it is probably safe to assume that the flying character will be Tails and the swinging character will be Knuckles.

While the only thing that Sega has announced with regard the release date is that "Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom" will be released soon, the studio promises players a better gaming experience than its predecessor. Sega stated that they have made improvements with the gameplay as well as the game's interface, cleaning up any tech problems seen in the first installment.

The first installment of "Sonic Dash" did fair well, with over 140 million copies downloaded. However, gamers did complain of the lack of a story mode and an over-abundance of app-purchase ploys which lessened the overall gaming experience. Nonetheless, the game was praised for its vibrant sounds and colors and the levels featured were unique and cheery.

"Sonic Dash 2" is yet another stepping stone for Sonic, which has found it hard to find a permanent home after the hedgehog's designer, Sega, gave up on making gaming consoles. Sonic has had multiple failures on multiple platforms including the Xbox 360 and Nintendo WII. It seems that the once ultra-popular mascot for Sega may go the way of other lost mascots such as Gex or Crash Bandicoot.

However, Sega is confident that the new endless runner they made is ready for global play and that fans new and old of the super-fast, blue hedgehog will enjoy the newest edition to the Sonic Library. "Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom" will be available for both iOS and Android systems.
