Cristiano Ronaldo has had one of the best years of his career evaporate into one of the worst.

Early in 2012-13 Ronaldo stated he was angry with Real Madrid. The speculation about a transfer immediately arose, and has increased over the last few weeks with Ronaldo once again expressing unhappiness.

However, a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United before Real Madrid's bout with Manchester City in the UCL prompted more speculation that Ronaldo might be headed back to his former club. Real coach Jose Mourinho was also present.

Ferguson has been very forthcoming about his interest in Ronaldo despite the difficulties of bringing him to England. "There's every chance that Ronaldo might leave Real, you never know," Ferguson declared. "I would like to think that he could return to Old Trafford but I don't think it will happen. You would be talking about incredible amounts of money."

Ronaldo has dissuaded rumors of leaving Madrid for Manchester United. "We didn't speak about me coming back to the Premier League, though," Cristiano Ronaldo said. "Sir Alex came to the hotel to speak with Jose Mourinho - it was nice to see him."

Regarding leaving Madrid he added, "Moving is not something I am thinking about though. I am happy at Real Madrid and I want to stay here and win things... What happens in the future is in the lap of the Gods. In life anything is possible and nothing is impossible, but for now I am not thinking about another club or a new contract."

It is widely believed that Ferguson could retire at the end of this season and could name his successor soon after. Jose Mourinho has been rumored to be the next coach for Manchester United and if this was the reason for the meeting, then it is rather strange that Ronaldo would be a part of it. Mourinho and Ronaldo have had a solid partnership together over the last year and if the coach runs to Manchester United then why would it be hard to believe that the superstar would not go with him?

There is also the fact that Ronaldo continues believing that the English Premier League is the most competitive in the world and that he admittedly loves the city.

"I loved coming back to the city. When we arrived at the airport, I was so happy. I'm always happy to be here," Cristiano Ronaldo added.

Ronaldo played for Manchester United from 2003-2009. In 196 matches for the club he scored 84 goals. During his tenure he won the Premier League Championship three times, the UEFA Champions League (2007-08), the FIFA Club World Cup (2008), and a number of other trophies. He also won the FIFA Player of the Year Award and Ballon d'Or in 2008. He has never replicated that success for his current club Real Madrid.
