The highly anticipated rematch between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez is not happening in 2015 but in 2016.
Such was revealed by UFC president Dana White recently after Werdum had reportedly requested for the fight to be moved as the champ is currently trying to nurse some injuries which he first made known back in July.
"I took a little time off after my fight because I got some bumps and bruises and also wanted to spend time with my family. I was away from my family for my training and then after the fight did some traveling for the UFC," Werdum said via Fox Sports. "Now I am back to training and feeling good. I would love to fight the first week of December."
However, it seems the next couple of months may not be enough for Werdum to be at 100 percent.
This development comes a bit of a surprise considering that Velasquez was the fighter known to be more injury-prone.
With this development, it would mean that other heavyweight fighters will have to pick up the slack and face each other in non-title matches. It also means that the heavyweight title will be left idle at least until March, 2016 where the Werdum vs. Velasquez match will reportedly take place.
"Unfortunately this heavyweight division is tied up right now and the fight won't happen probably until March, the next heavyweight fight," White said. "We'll see how this thing plays out and we'll go from there."
The delay could also be a good one for Velasquez, giving him more ample time to recover and train as he tries to rebound from a sorry loss to Werdum at UFC 188 which was held at the Mexico City Arena held last June.
Despite the triumph, many see Werdum’s triumph an upset despite the fact that the he won via submission in the third round of that clash.
The altitude of the arena was singled out as a vital factor in Werdum’s win. Werdum got himself used to the setting, planning in early to get used to the high altitude. Velasquez arrived two weeks prior to the event and such took a toll on the comebacking American mixed martial artist.
The delay could also place Andrei Arlovski on hold.
After beating Frank Mir recently at the co-event of UFC 191, Arlovski could be lined up to fight the winner between Werdum and Velasquez. But as things stand now, even that opportunity is put on hold.
