Fans of the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series will be receiving new content for their expanded universe.
A new comic book entitled "Avatar: The Last Airbender - Smoke and Shadow" will be debuting on October 6, 2015. According to an interview done by EW with series writer Gene Luen Yang, the story of the comic will revolve around Zuko and what happened to him after the events of the hit children's TV show.
For those who are not familiar, Zuko finds himself in an odd position as the new Firelord of the Fire Nation after Aang defeats Phoenix Lord Ozai and strips him of his bending ability. Zuko is left as the only member of the royal family capable of leading the Fire Nation, as his sister Azula was also defeated and driven mad after being made Firelord herself.
Luen Yang delves more into the story by saying that Zuko's biggest problem is that of self-control. Since Zuko became the Firelord, he has been struggling to do what is right. While he wants to do what's good for the Firenation and the other nations as well, his only reference on how to be a Firelord has come from what he has seen first-hand from his father and grandfather. Fans know that both of them wanted to conquer the entire world.
The writer goes on to say that while these issues seem a bit sophisticated and delve deeply into Zuko's personality, the target audience for the comic will be children as well as adults. Luen Yang insists that the best thing about the original "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series was that although the target audience was children, the show was able to tackle the more mature topics in subtle ways. Luen Yang goes on to say that every character in the series had their own dark side that they had to deal with, and the show did a great job touching on each of them in its own way.
Comicbook.com also revealed that "Smoke and Shadow" will deal with the events that happened in a previous "Avatar" comic book series "The Search", in which Zuko finally found his long-lost mother. Luen Yang states that Zuko will bring back his mother to the Firenation as a show of power.
While the comic will mostly deal with what Zuko is planning for the Firenation moving forward, Luen Yang tells fans that characters from the TV show will be making appearances. Avatar Aang is seen on a lot of the artwork, and should play a vital role in the series.
