"It's morphin time!" Almost.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are heading to the big screen in a few years. Saban Entertainment's 1990's action-packed franchise is looking to get a modern reboot. Fans will be happy to know, head honchos behind the major motion picture are looking to frame the movie to the likes of the original series.
Collider News has revealed details on the characters, which will definitely be key to the movie's success. The modern take will be based on the same colorful band of super hero teenagers, named Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Billy, and Zack.
Jason, is described as the former superstar quarterback who lost his entire career, and himself, after a car accident. The teenager finds himself regaining his self-confidence as he leads the spandex-donned group to save the world against the Putty Patrol.
Kimberly was a popular gymnast who left high school for six months. After she returns, she is plagued by the rumors surrounding her absence forcing her into a rebellious attitude.
Trini is always the "new kid," as her parents constantly move for work. She is bright, but mysterious. The lone teenager is mainly looking for a cool gang of friends.
Billy is smart, nerdy, and socially awkward. Collider describes the brainy teen as, "Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge." He finds himself befriending the former star-athlete, Jason.
Zack is a confident teenager. He is a party-animal, an awesome athlete, and "a charming guy who's never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women," explains Collider News. However, he hides the fact that he lives in a trailer park with his mother.
At this time, there has been no official announcement from casting on who will reprise the roles of the crime-fighting teens.
Production wise, Roberto Orci has signed on to executive produce Lionsgate's "Power Rangers" movie, according to Variety. Orci is known for his work on a number of major grossing super hero flicks including, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Star Trek," "Star Trek: Into Darkness," "Transformers" and "Mission: Impossible III." Screenwriters, Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, are developing the storyline along with Orci. The pair have worked with the producer on "X-Men: First Class" and "Thor."
"Project Almanac's" Dean Israelite is expected to direct the film. Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama of "The Last Witch Hunter" are said to have turned in an early draft of the script which Israelite promises is a "mature but still playful" take on the series.
Lionsgate and Saban Brands announced the "Power Rangers" project in May. The film is expected to hit theaters Jan. 13, 2017.
