The Android M is currently in the testing stage and was previously available on some Nexus devices as Developer Preview. On July 10, 2015, Google also featured the Android M Preview 2 update for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.
The new update for the Developer Preview build which will offer some bug fixes as well as enhance the overall stability of the system, Android Geeks reported. The new update will also provide new features. As a Developer Preview build, users should not expect it to be used as a daily driver and expect occasional crashes and bugs.
Users who flashed a factory image on their Nexus device before, will find the installation of the Android M Preview 2 quite familiar. Users can download the Android M Developer Preview factory image compatible with their device, then install the Android SDK tool to determine which Google USB drivers are functional.
Next, users have to extract the Android M Preview 2 factory image in “platform tools” folder and boot their device in Bootloader mode. Next, run the “flash-all.bat” script to start the installation process. Since a factory image will be installed, users should expect all the data stored on their device to be deleted. This can be avoided by editing the “flash-all.bat” script and taking out the “-w” flags. The approach is not recommended for those coming from Lollipop or lower, however.
Android Geeks also wrote that users who are currently running a Developer Preview build will get an Android M Preview 2 update for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 over-the-air (OTA). The roll out will be made in a gradual manner, so the time of arrival will vary depending on the device model and location of the user. Users should find a system update message in their notifications panel when the update is ready.
To install the update, users should tap on their notification panel and choose “Download Now”. Wait for the download to complete then choose “Install Now”. The Nexus device should reboot and install the update. Users can also manually check for updates by going to Settings >About device > System updates > Check for update. Link to a Wi-Fi network while downloading Android M Developer Preview 2, since the update file is large. It should take several minutes to fully install.
In Android M, apps will request for permissions only when these are being accessed for the first time. There will be Chrome custom tabs, allowing faster in-app browsing. There will be new APIs and native support for fingerprint readers and the new Doze battery-saving feature.
