Nokia is preparing to change the smartphone game with their latest Lumia series on Friday when it launches exclusively with AT&T.
The iPhone 5 is currently helping Apple in their battle in the smartphone market against Samsung and their Galaxy S3 device. But it is the iPhone 5 that has most people's attention, particularly leading to the Holiday shopping season.
Nokia is seeking to have the upper hand with its larger screen, rear-facing camera, operating system, and variety of colors.
When it comes to the screen, the Lumia 920 offers a 4.5-inch screen with 1,280x768 pixel resolution with up to 332 pixels per inch (ppi). The iPhone 5's screen is 0.5-inches smaller, at four-inches, with a pixel resolution of 1,136x640 and ppi of 326.
The rear-facing camera appears to be better for the Lumia 920, touting 8.7-megapixels with 3,264x2,448 pixels. The front-facing camera has 1.3 megapixels. Other features on the Lumia 920's camera include Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, dual-LED flash, PureView technology, and geo-tagging.
For the iPhone 5, the rear-facing camera has eight-megapixels with 3,264x2,448 pixels. The front-facing camera stands at 1.2-megapixels. Other camera features include autofocus, LED flash, simultaneous HD video and image recording, panorama, geo-tagging, face detection, and FaceTime.
The two smartphones are available in 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE networks but the iPhone 5 carriers more carriers than the Nokia device. The Lumia 920 is exclusive to AT&T while the iPhone 5 is also carried on Sprint, Verizon, as well as AT&T.
The internal memories of the smartphones are very different. The Lumia 920 only offers a 32GB model with 1GB of RAM compared to the iPhone 5's 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB but maintains the 1GB of RAM.
Wireless connectivity is similar, offering Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, and access to Bluetooth version 4.0, with A2DP. The Lumia 920, however, does offer Near Field Communication (NFC).
The battery capacity for the Lumia 920 is 2,000 mAh, exceeding the iPhone 5's 1,440 mAh.
The talk time on the iPhone 5 when fully charged is eight hours in 3G and 2G. Standby time can withstand 225 hours in 2G and 3G.
Talk time for the Lumia 920 is 17 hours in 2G and 10 hours for 3G when fully charged and standby time is 400 hours for both 2G and 3G.
The operating system for the iPhone 5 is the new iOS 6, and the Lumia 920 offers the latest Windows Phone 8.
The color options for the iPhone 5 are black and white while the Lumia 920 is available in black, gray, red, yellow, and white.
The Lumia 920 is available for $99.99 when signing onto a two-year contract, $299.99 for a one-year contract, and the no commitment fee will be $449.99.
The iPhone 5's starting price for the 16GB is $199, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for the 64GB model.
The Lumia 920 is available for preorders as of Tues., Nov. 6 and will be in retailers on Nov. 9.
