Huawei Nexus will be launched later in 2015, featuring the collaborative work between the two companies.
An insider told International Business Times UK that Huawei is working closely with Google in developing a new Nexus smartphone, which will hopefully boost its relationship with the internet giant as well as improve its reputation in the West. The source did not discuss the specifications of the upcoming device and the official release date.
There were prior rumors that the Huawei Nexus phone will feature a 5.7-inch Quad HD display and a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset. Chinese analyst Jiutang Pan, the head of research at the Shenzhen Huaqiuang Electronics Research Institute, also confirmed the two specifications on the upcoming phone and said that the device will be released sometime in the second half of 2015.
Huawei is the largest smartphone manufacturer in China, but may not successfully sell the Nexus handset because Google's online services included in the device are banned by the Chinese government. The Huawei insider shared that Google and Huawei may working something out to overcome the ban posed by the Chinese government on Google services. At MWC 2015, Google had expressed its plans to return to China. Android Authority stated that it will be ideal for Google to partner with a Chinese manufacturer, considering how other brands like Xiaomi, ZTE and Lenovo are doing well in the market at present.
"China is a phenomenon unto itself. It is important to remember that most of the innovation [happening with Chinese smartphones like Xiaomi and OnePlus] is powered by Android. So we are very committed, we work very hard. I met with partners from China this morning so it's a big part of what we do. We would of course love to see Google services on top of their experience," Sundar Pichai of Google said in a report by IB Times.
There were also reports that Google is working with LG on a second Nexus smartphone, although the Huawei model will be the bigger between the two. The LG Nexus is said to feature 5.2 inches of screen. The two phones will reportedly launch before the end of the year. Android Police cited that the Huawei version will be called "Angler", while the LG version will be referred to as "Bullhead". The Angler is also said to include a 3,500mAh battery while the Bullhead has a 2,700mAh battery.
Google has not commented yet on the recent updates.
